These bite-sized morsels are a deep brown, toasted color and sprinkled generously with coarse salt. Our tasters really enjoyed the contrast in textures between the nugget and the filling. The pretzel itself is hard and crusty and has a deep, whole grain flavor and hint of molasses. The smooth, soft peanut butter does not overpower; this treat still tastes like a pretzel, albeit a deliciously addicting one with a luscious surprise in the middle.

From the team of famed chef Thomas Keller comes the first multipurpose gluten-free flour that gave us pretty even results when using it in a variety of recipes, including our mini chocolate cakes. We’ve been relying on it, with pleasure, for years, as have many restaurant chefs (get some of their recipes below). The flour mix has a soft texture and neutral flavor that will blend seamlessly in nearly all of your favorite recipes. But with every GF flour mix we’ve tried, it’s not always the optimal choice to use across the board. But still, it’s one of the safest bets. FYI, it contains powdered milk, so it’s not suitable for people avoiding dairy.

Product Review: Shrubbly Small Batch Sparkling Shrub https://gffmag.com/product-review-shrubbly-small-batch-sparkling-shrub/ https://gffmag.com/product-review-shrubbly-small-batch-sparkling-shrub/#respond Sun, 15 Aug 2021 16:07:00 +0000 https://gffmag.com/?p=228857 Read More]]> If you’re wondering what a “shrub” is when it’s not part of a bush, here’s the answer: it’s a non-alcoholic fruit-, aromatics-, and vinegar-based syrup. Mix it with bubbly water or booze and you’ve got a tasty drink. And that’s exactly what Shrubbly makes: tasty canned, non-alcoholic shrub-based drinks made with their own custom shrub recipes and sparkling water.

Lightly-sparkling and refreshing, their prebiotic drink is made in small batches from organic ingredients in rural Vermont. It’s available in two flavors (Lemon Ginger & Aronia Berry or Aronia Berry & Pomegranate), and include organic aronia berry, which is a nutrient powerhouse that’s high in antioxidants and immune-boosting properties. Plus there’s organic apple cider vinegar, which provides additional prebiotics and digestive-health benefits.

But, what about the taste? These bubblies are tart and fruity, which may surprise you if you are expecting a plain old flavored seltzer. Once you settle into the lip-puckering tang, the experience is invigorating and thirst-quenching.

When to reach for Shrubbly? Consider it a nice alternative to a cocktail right out of the can, or pour it over ice with some vodka, or other mixers and garnishes to create unique and flavorful cocktails or non-alcoholic cocktails.

Product Review: Goodie Girl Birthday Cake Cookies https://gffmag.com/product-review-goodie-girl-birthday-cake-cookies/ https://gffmag.com/product-review-goodie-girl-birthday-cake-cookies/#comments Sat, 01 Aug 2020 22:41:38 +0000 https://gffmag.com/?p=222481 Read More]]> Our Junior Editor Viva was sold on these gluten free vanilla sandwich cookies just by looking at the box. “Birthday Cake” cookies? Sprinkles? It’s like a party in a box. At the checkout stand, our clerk told us he’s not even GF and doesn’t love cookies, yet he ate 10 in one sitting. So, are they ALL THAT? Let’s break it down.

First, we’ll start with the look: unlike the photo on the box, you won’t see lots of colorful sprinkles in the filling. You may see one or two muted stripes of color. But that’s beside the point. It’s the taste that matters, and these cookies are pretty darned good. The cookie is crisp, but not too dry (which can be the case with GF sandwich cookies), and it’s not overly sweet. The filling is very sweet, however. (A plus for our junior editor but a little less so for my grown up editor-in-chief palate). Still, as the clerk suggested, they are very easy going down, so even though I prefer chocolate sandwich cookies over vanilla, I ate a good handful of them, and quite happily.
